Building A Biblical Business

When Ashley and I began thinking about starting a second business, which is now Mermaid Money, we wanted to be certain our motivation was aligned with God's will, not simply with the desire to earn more money. We spent time praying, studying Scripture, and asking ourselves, "What does God want us to be doing, and how can we honor Him through this business?" Along the way, we discovered several biblical principles that have become the foundation of Mermaid Money, and we wanted to share them with you.

Our goal isn't simply to make more money.

From the very beginning, we knew that financial gain alone could never be the purpose of this business. Scripture repeatedly warns against making wealth our focus or pursuing it with the wrong motives.

"No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money." — Matthew 6:24

"Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions." — Luke 12:15

Money is a tool, not our master. We believe true success is measured by faithfulness to God rather than the size of a bank account.

We want our business to serve God and others.

Our greatest desire is for Mermaid Money to glorify God in everything we do.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." — Matthew 6:33

Every decision we make should point back to Him. Whether it's creating products with excellence, treating customers with kindness, or writing posts like this one, we hope our work reflects Christ's love.

We hope that as God blesses this business, we'll be able to bless others through generosity and support those in need. As the business grows, we hope to continue giving generously to those in need and supporting ministries that build His Kingdom.

"A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." — Proverbs 11:25

We wanted to build wisely and avoid unnecessary debt.

Another principle that shaped our approach was avoiding loans and high-interest debt whenever possible.

"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." — Proverbs 22:7

Instead of borrowing heavily, we chose to grow with the resources God had already provided. Cameron focused on building the website, managing social media, and handling the administrative side of the business, while Ashley handcrafted each piece and prepared products for the shop.

Working together has reminded us of the strength found in partnership.

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." — Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

As we work together and seek to keep Christ at the center of our marriage and our business, we're reminded of the strength found in partnership.

We're committed to growing patiently.

We never expected Mermaid Money to become an overnight success, and we didn't want that expectation to shape our decisions. We believe lasting growth comes through

faithfulness, consistency, and trusting God's timing.

"Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." — Proverbs 13:11

Ultimately, this business belongs to God. We can work diligently and plan wisely, but He is the One who directs our steps.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." — Proverbs 3:5–6

We don't know exactly where God will lead Mermaid Money in the years ahead, but we're committed to following Him one step at a time. If this business succeeds, we pray it will be because it has honored Him, served others well, and been used as a small part of building His Kingdom.
